The 2012 British Hairdressing Awards are Launched

Inspiring Creativity - Pushing Boundaries

The countdown to the most prestigious and exciting event in the hairdressing calendar has begun with the launch of Hairdressers Journal International’s British Hairdressing Awards.

Now in their 29th year, and sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, The British Hairdressing awards are affectionately known as the ‘Oscar’s’ of the hairdressing industry. The awards recognise and reward the hairdressers who are consistently pushing the boundaries of creativity and influencing the way in which we wear our hair today. HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards is the jewel in the crown of the British hairdressing industry, one that is renowned globally for being innovative and inspirational.

Any salon based hairdresser can enter the competition and compete to win one of the nine regional categories, which cover the length and breadth of the country or the six specialist categories which include a variety of disciplines including Afro, Men’s, Newcomer, Artistic Team, Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician and Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year along with the ultimate award – British Hairdresser of the Year. The past winners of HJ's British Hairdresser of the Year read like a who’s who of hairdressing with Trevor Sorbie, Irvine & Rita Rusk, John Frieda, Anthony Mascolo, Umberto Giannini, Andrew Collinge, Nicky Clarke, Charles Worthington, Mark Hill, Beverly C, Antoinette Beenders, Lisa Shepherd, Andrew Barton, Angelo Seminara and Akin Konizi all being awarded the coveted silver trophy.

HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards is based on photographic entries that demonstrate the skills and talents of the entrant. Initially a set of four photographs showing emerging trends are judged anonymously by a distinguished panel of judges including members of the British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame - hairdressers who have won their chosen category three times together with industry experts. Their marks are handed to a group of independent adjudicators and six finalists are selected in each category to go through to the next round. Finalists are then required to produce an additional four images to be judged as a collection of eight.

Jayne Lewis-Orr, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Hairdressers Journal International added, “Each year the standard of entries exceeds our expectations. The creativity within the British hairdressing industry is incredible; hairdressers from all over the world look to the UK for inspiration. The prestige of winning a British Hairdressing Award has been instrumental in taking many hairdressers career to a new level.”

For a hairdresser to be nominated for British Hairdresser of the Year, members of the Hall of Fame, key industry figures, members of the UK and international press are invited to nominate hairdressers they feel would be a worthy ambassador for British hairdressing. In 2011, Akin Konizi from HOB Salons was awarded the much sought after title for the third time. “ Winning British Hairdresser of the Year for the third time was very unexpected, but at the same time a huge honour and greatly appreciated,” adds Akin. “Winning a British Hairdressing Award really does change your life and I am proud to be a global ambassador for British Hairdressing.”

The British Hairdressing awards will be held on Monday 26th November 2012 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, a JW Marriott Hotel, where a leading media personality will announce the winners.
