The 2012 British Hairdressing Awards are Launched

Inspiring Creativity - Pushing Boundaries

The countdown to the most prestigious and exciting event in the hairdressing calendar has begun with the launch of Hairdressers Journal International’s British Hairdressing Awards.

Now in their 29th year, and sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, The British Hairdressing awards are affectionately known as the ‘Oscar’s’ of the hairdressing industry. The awards recognise and reward the hairdressers who are consistently pushing the boundaries of creativity and influencing the way in which we wear our hair today. HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards is the jewel in the crown of the British hairdressing industry, one that is renowned globally for being innovative and inspirational.

Any salon based hairdresser can enter the competition and compete to win one of the nine regional categories, which cover the length and breadth of the country or the six specialist categories which include a variety of disciplines including Afro, Men’s, Newcomer, Artistic Team, Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician and Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year along with the ultimate award – British Hairdresser of the Year. The past winners of HJ's British Hairdresser of the Year read like a who’s who of hairdressing with Trevor Sorbie, Irvine & Rita Rusk, John Frieda, Anthony Mascolo, Umberto Giannini, Andrew Collinge, Nicky Clarke, Charles Worthington, Mark Hill, Beverly C, Antoinette Beenders, Lisa Shepherd, Andrew Barton, Angelo Seminara and Akin Konizi all being awarded the coveted silver trophy.

HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards is based on photographic entries that demonstrate the skills and talents of the entrant. Initially a set of four photographs showing emerging trends are judged anonymously by a distinguished panel of judges including members of the British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame - hairdressers who have won their chosen category three times together with industry experts. Their marks are handed to a group of independent adjudicators and six finalists are selected in each category to go through to the next round. Finalists are then required to produce an additional four images to be judged as a collection of eight.

Jayne Lewis-Orr, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Hairdressers Journal International added, “Each year the standard of entries exceeds our expectations. The creativity within the British hairdressing industry is incredible; hairdressers from all over the world look to the UK for inspiration. The prestige of winning a British Hairdressing Award has been instrumental in taking many hairdressers career to a new level.”

For a hairdresser to be nominated for British Hairdresser of the Year, members of the Hall of Fame, key industry figures, members of the UK and international press are invited to nominate hairdressers they feel would be a worthy ambassador for British hairdressing. In 2011, Akin Konizi from HOB Salons was awarded the much sought after title for the third time. “ Winning British Hairdresser of the Year for the third time was very unexpected, but at the same time a huge honour and greatly appreciated,” adds Akin. “Winning a British Hairdressing Award really does change your life and I am proud to be a global ambassador for British Hairdressing.”

The British Hairdressing awards will be held on Monday 26th November 2012 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, a JW Marriott Hotel, where a leading media personality will announce the winners.

British Hairdressing Awards 2011 Finalists Announced - Who will be The One?

British Hairdressing Awards 2011 Finalists Announced Who will be The One?

Hairdressers Journal International is pleased to announce the finalists for the nine regional and six specialist categories for the British Hairdressing Awards 2011.

The British Hairdressing Awards, launched back in 1984 by Hairdressers Journal International and sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, have celebrated and rewarded the best of British hairdressing creativity for 27 years, and are universally recognised as the ‘Oscars’ of the hairdressing world.

To enter the competition, hairdressers working in salons throughout the United Kingdom must submit four images, that meet the relevant criteria, and reflect current trends. Depending on the hairdresser’s location, they can enter their regional category – Eastern, London, Midlands, North Eastern, North Western, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Southern or Wales & South West. If their talents lie within a particular discipline, they are also able to enter one of the six specialist categories – Afro Hairdresser of the Year, Artistic Team of the Year, Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year, Men’s Hairdresser of the Year, Newcomer of the Year or Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year.

The first round judging takes place to establish the six finalists in the regional and specialist categories with members of HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame, along with previous British Hairdressing Award winners and respected hairdressers judging the work. Judges cannot confer during the judging process, and each mark all entries independently, with the score sheets being handed to a team of independent auditors, who then process the results to find the six finalists in each category.

In addition to the 15 regional and specialist categories, the most hotly contested award is for the British Hairdresser of the Year title. Entry to this award is by nomination only, and in 2011 there are eight nominees for the title – Andrew Barton, Errol Douglas, Tim Hartley, Mark Hayes, Gary Hooker & Michael Young, Akin Konizi, Mark Leeson and Angelo Seminara.

“Each year the standard of entries in all categories becomes more creative and inspirational,” comments Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Hairdressers Journal International, Jayne Lewis-Orr. “British hairdressing is perceived throughout the world as being the best, and the British Hairdressing Awards recognise and reward creativity and excellence in all hairdressing skills.”

To go forward to the second round, the six finalists in each category have to produce a second set of four images, which will then be judged as a complete set of eight. The same guidelines are adhered to as before, with the winner being announced at the biggest event in the hairdressing industry’s calendar, a glittering awards dinner presented by a leading media personality at the Grosvenor House Hotel, a JW Marriott Hotel, Park Lane, London on Monday 28th November 2011.
