I&K International announces rise in sales of male grooming products
I&K International has announced a 'significant' increase in sales of products from its men's range. The surge in sales is believed to have been a direct result of the addition of new men's products over the last few years, as well as a general increase in the amount of attention men are paying to grooming.
In fact the firm saw an impressive 60% rise in the number of men buying these products when compared to the same time last year. These figures seem to indicate men are paying more attention to their physical appearance and grooming than ever before, and Kevin Kou, managing director at I&K International, believes it is down to a combination of more brands being available, as well as the influence of well-groomed celebrities.
Mr Kou said: "We recently launched some new brands into our men's product range and we're already seeing great results. Since the introduction of products such as The Bluebeards Revenge, men-u and Mitch we've had a large rise in male customers as well as a general rise in the sales of products for men.
"The rise in male grooming is possibly due to the influence of well-groomed male celebrities like David Beckham, Ryan Reynolds and Bradley Cooper. Men are spending more time and money on shopping for their appearance than ever before and we are now starting to see this trend at Hairtrade."
Hairtrade will be adding further products to the men's range as well as new brands throughout the site over the coming months including new hair care, make-up and skin care products.

ghd help you get the Kate Middleton look
To honour the nation’s favourite Princess on her 30th birthday (9th January), ghd Creative Director and Session Stylist, Kenna, tells us how to achieve Kate Middleton’s luscious locks. The hair of the moment is, without a doubt, the big and bouncy blow dry.
Using the power of the brand new ghd air hairdryer, follow Kenna’s six simple steps below to help you recreate the Duchess’s effortlessly stylish signature look.
Today's blow dry isn't about flat lengths scooped under at the ends, the style is big, loose and sexy hair with movement, volume and shine." ghd Creative Director, Kenna.
GET THE LOOK:
1. To begin, towel dry hair leaving in as much moisture as possible.
2. Apply ghd Style Root Lift Spray from roots down and ghd Style Total Volume Foam from tips up for a big bouncy blow-dry style. You will want to start by drying the roots to activate the Root Lift Spray; this product is great for the whole length of the hair because it adds texture.
3. Flip your head upside down and continue drying with your fingers, keeping your ghd air on low speed and low heat—let gravity help you build volume.
4. Once your hair is close to dry, turn up the heat on the ghd air and flip your head back up, continuing now with a ghd Ceramic Radial Brush. I like a soft no-parting look so really work the brush around the head, starting from the front, in all directions. When using a radial brush keep turning it back away from the face as you pull up from the roots. Keep the ghd air nozzle close and move your hair around both the underside and the top of the brush.
5. Make use of the cool shot button on ghd air to fix the style, bringing a cool shot of air over the hair as you dry with the radial brush will fix it in place. Once the hair is completely dry and volume perfected, a blast of cold underneath the style will give it a tousled look.
6. To complete the look use the ghd Style Final Fix Spray to give hold and shape to your volume.
All ghd products are available in the finest salons and at www.ghdhair.com
ghd air RRP £99
ghd Style RRP £10-£15
ghd brushes £7.50-£20

Happy 35th Birthday To Us! And The 'King Of Colour' Has Done It Again...
Daniel Galvin OBE is renowned for being the ‘King of Colour’. During the 1960s he invented ‘Crazy Colour’, he modernised the highlighting industry with his ‘Brickwork’ technique and throughout the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st has been continually developing his art by coming up with new, innovative ways of creating the perfect hair colour.
2012 marks 35 years of business for Daniel Galvin and his Marylebone salon and to celebrate this, Daniel has launched a revolutionary new way of colouring the hair. Our new exciting technique is called Finger Painting by Daniel Galvin and is a free-flowing, effortless look produced by gradually coaxing and teasing the colour through the middle to the tips of the hair with the fingers rather than applying the colour using combs and brushes and baking it in foils.
Using a specially prepared formula Daniel lifts the colour that already lies within the natural pigment of the hair, producing a hue that is a few shades lighter than the original and thus delivering a soft, uncontrived effect. Similarly, the finger weaving produces a gentle, more unaffected appearance, avoiding harsh, angular foil lines.
Daniel is thrilled to once again bring a new colouring procedure to the industry: “My key professional aim is to ‘Enhance Natural Beauty’ and I feel that this technique perfectly demonstrates that philosophy. This is such an ideal method for me – by using my hands I’m really getting in touch with my canvas and forcing to the surface that inner natural beauty.”

British Hairdressing Awards 2011 Finalists Announced - Who will be The One?
British Hairdressing Awards 2011 Finalists Announced Who will be The One?
Hairdressers Journal International is pleased to announce the finalists for the nine regional and six specialist categories for the British Hairdressing Awards 2011.
The British Hairdressing Awards, launched back in 1984 by Hairdressers Journal International and sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, have celebrated and rewarded the best of British hairdressing creativity for 27 years, and are universally recognised as the ‘Oscars’ of the hairdressing world.
To enter the competition, hairdressers working in salons throughout the United Kingdom must submit four images, that meet the relevant criteria, and reflect current trends. Depending on the hairdresser’s location, they can enter their regional category – Eastern, London, Midlands, North Eastern, North Western, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Southern or Wales & South West. If their talents lie within a particular discipline, they are also able to enter one of the six specialist categories – Afro Hairdresser of the Year, Artistic Team of the Year, Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year, Men’s Hairdresser of the Year, Newcomer of the Year or Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year.
The first round judging takes place to establish the six finalists in the regional and specialist categories with members of HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame, along with previous British Hairdressing Award winners and respected hairdressers judging the work. Judges cannot confer during the judging process, and each mark all entries independently, with the score sheets being handed to a team of independent auditors, who then process the results to find the six finalists in each category.
In addition to the 15 regional and specialist categories, the most hotly contested award is for the British Hairdresser of the Year title. Entry to this award is by nomination only, and in 2011 there are eight nominees for the title – Andrew Barton, Errol Douglas, Tim Hartley, Mark Hayes, Gary Hooker & Michael Young, Akin Konizi, Mark Leeson and Angelo Seminara.
“Each year the standard of entries in all categories becomes more creative and inspirational,” comments Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Hairdressers Journal International, Jayne Lewis-Orr. “British hairdressing is perceived throughout the world as being the best, and the British Hairdressing Awards recognise and reward creativity and excellence in all hairdressing skills.”
To go forward to the second round, the six finalists in each category have to produce a second set of four images, which will then be judged as a complete set of eight. The same guidelines are adhered to as before, with the winner being announced at the biggest event in the hairdressing industry’s calendar, a glittering awards dinner presented by a leading media personality at the Grosvenor House Hotel, a JW Marriott Hotel, Park Lane, London on Monday 28th November 2011.

Sassoon your hair straight!
Many people love super sleek locks, but why do they spend a fortune on straighteners? And what should we really be looking for? With 45% of women and 20% of men owning a pair of hair straighteners, top UK hair styling brand, Sassoon thought it was time to put us straight on straightening.
Forget focusing on temperature and concentrate on what really makes a straightener great!
1. Ionic technology: Ionic technology is used to emit negatively charged ions onto the hair shaft to break down water molecules and lock in the natural moisture in the hair, leaving it looking shiny, smooth and ultra-glossy. The Sassoon Hydragloss Straightener boasts variable ionic technology to create super chic locks whatever your hair type and look. The ceramic plates also tackle super smooth styling on 9 heat control settings between 150°c - 230°c for different hair types and styles. An LCD display panel ensures clear indication of the settings in use to get the best out of styling.
2. Ceramic plates: Ceramic plates allow for smooth contact with the hair shaft, preventing snagging and minimising heat damage which can sometimes occur during hair styling. They also improve heat distribution through the hair so that results are perfect every time. Sassoon's Perfectly Smooth Straightener is the ultimate tool for adding that finishing touch to straight, sleek styles. Featuring ceramic plates with a top temperature of 230°c, straightening is quick and simple achieving smooth styles at home that really wow.
3. Variable heat settings: Not all hair is the same, and we don't all need a sizzling heat to iron out kinks. High heat can damage fine hair, so the hottest temperatures don't always lead to the best styles. Sassoon's Platinum Edition straightener always gives maximum hair protection with the glitziest of results. The 25 variable heat settings and luxury heat-proof pouch separates the product from its competitors. Sleek, straight hair that glimmers is achieved with the styler's superior heat conductivity, and its ionic technology smooths down hair cuticles for swishable locks.
4. Ease of use: Let's face it, technology isn't everything and sometimes we just want a straightener we can drop into our bags and use after the gym or for a quick fix in the office before after-work drinks. Sassoon's Limited Edition Maxi Mini straighteners are ideal for women on the go. The straightener duo provides great styles at home or out and about. A full size straighteners ceramic plates minimise heat damage to the hair cuticle. The easy to manage swivel chord makes styling at home even simpler. The duo also includes a powerful 200°c palm sized mini straightener which can be tossed into the handbag, for hair in a hurry to take you through from day to night.
Sassoon styling products are available from all good electrical retailers.

Healthy, Strong Summer Locks
With the summer in sight it's essential that like our bodies, we prepare our hair for the harsh summer sun, with over exposure to damaging elements like the sun's harmful UV rays our hair ends up more damaged than ever before with dry roots and fried ends hair often appears lacklustre and broken as a result of the summer sun.
Unlucky for our hair, this time of year brings other harmful elements to our fragile hair with salt in the sea and chlorine filled swimming pools, our hair is likely to be stripped of its natural moisture leaving it dry, brittle and susceptible to breakage.
To strengthen hair this summer, renowned trichologist Tony Maleedy recommends using the acclaimed LA Science Follicle Stimulating Shampoo (£14.99) to keep hair strong and healthy this summer. Tony comments "Hair is at its most vulnerable in the summer with over exposure to the sun causing worse damage to the hair than heat styling with a hair dryer, straighteners or curlers.
"As you would with skin, prepare your hair for your summer holiday this year by using the LA Science Follicle Stimulating Shampoo for at least one month before jetting off. Continue to use throughout your holiday to keep hair strong, healthy and shiny and for at least one month after leaving hair beautifully conditioned, strong and healthier than ever."
The LA Science Follicle Stimulating Shampoo helps nourish the hair and maintains the optimum conditions for a healthy scalp by increasing circulation to the scalp thus creating a healthy environment for hair growth giving us long flowing and strong hair this summer.
Simply massage a small amount of shampoo through wet hair, starting from the roots and working through to the ends. No conditioner is
required as the formulation contains luxurious conditioning agents and any barriers placed on the hair would prevent the active ingredients penetrating the hair shaft.
